MWWF HISTORY

Past & Current Milestones

Waterskiing in Malaysia started in the 1950s by expatriate planters doing combo-ski, slalom and free skiing in beach resorts like Port Dickson & Penang mainly on a recreational basis amongst friends & family members. In the 70s & 80s, waterskiing took hold in lakes in Ampang Hilir as well as in Batu Arang and later at the Mines. Jumping and trick skiing were introduced in addition to slalom.

Malaysian Water Ski Federation (MWSF) operated the National Water Ski Centre in Tasik Desa, Kuala Lumpur

Alex Yoong participated in the IWSF World Junior Championship (18-12 Jul) in Medellin Columbia.

Organised the IWSF Asian Water Ski Championship (11-15 Dec) in Kuala Lumpur.  Phillipa Yoong won Silver Medal in women’s slalom.   

Together with SAMP, MWSF assisted the Singapore Water Ski Federation in organizing the IWSF Water Ski World Championship in Kallang, Singapore. MWSF’s Honorary Secretary, Hanifah Yoong appointed Event Director in the World Championship. Phillipa and Alex Yoong selected to participate in the World Championship.

Phillipa Yoong and Alex Yoong selected for the Moomba Masters (10 Mar) in Melbourne, Australia

Organised the IWSF Asian Australasian Water Ski Championship (01-06 Nov) in Kuala Lumpur. Phillipa Yoong broke the national records in women’s slalom, jump and tricks

MWSF operated the National Water Ski Centre in Tasik Biru in Sungai Buloh

Hanifah has been appointed as an Executive Board Member of International Water Ski Federation

Malaysian national team comprising Adam Lokman, Alex Yoong and Phillipa Yoong and officials Roland Tan (Team Manager), Joanna Yoong (Chaperon) to the 19thJakarta SEA Games. Medals won: 1 Gold Medal (Phillipa Yoong – women’s jump), 1 Silver Medal (Alex Yoong – men’s slalom), and 2 Bronze Medals (Phillipa Yoong – women’s jump and tricks)

Malaysian national team comprising Phillipa Yoong and Rajesh Gill and officials, Norzeela Sulaiman (Team Manager) to the 13th Asian Championships in Ras Al-Khaimah, UAE (26-29 Oct). Medals won: 1 Bronze Medal (Phillipa Yoong – women’s jump), 1 Silver Medal (Alex Yoong – men’s slalom), and 2 Bronze Medals (Phillipa Yoong – women’s jump and tricks)

After a name change to Malaysian Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (MWWF) secured the rights for the IWSF Water Ski World Cup

MWWF in collaboration with Waterski & Wakeboard World Cup Sdn. Bhd. (WWWC) successfully secured Putrajaya City’s support to stage the IWWF Waterski World Cup in Putrajaya’s Water Sports Complex

MWWF with WWWC successfully co-organized the IWWF Putrajaya Waterski World Cup rom 7th to 9th Nov 08 as well as the 4 rounds of the 2009 Malaysian National Waterski & Wakeboard Championships in Putrajaya

MWSF has organized 2009 IWSF Asian Australasian International Wakeboard Judging Seminar at Pullman Putrajaya on 14-15 May conducted by Rocky Lok, the IWSF World Wakeboard Council member

MWWF launched it’s ambitious 10-Year Development Plan to produce a Waterski World Champion by 2020 and started training 16 young Malaysians from age 5 to 11. WWWC is the main sponsor for this Plan

Malaysian national team comprising Phillipa Yoong (Team Captain), Aaliyah Yoong, Hanis Azemi, Hadi Irfan Rahaizah and Azemi Jusoh (Team Manager) to the Asian Australasian Oceania Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia (04-10 Oct). Medal won: 1 silver (Phillipa Yoong – Asian women’s overall), 1 bronze (Asian women’s slalom)

Malaysian national team comprising a very young athletes, Aaliyah Yoong, Hanis Azemi, Hadi Irfan Rahaizah, Shamal Norman Abdul Rahman led by Phillipa Yoong (Team Captain) and Emirul Shahimy Ab Wahab (Team Manager) to the 2nd Asian Beach Games in Muscat, Oman (08-16 Dec). Aaliyah Yoong was presented with a special award by the Muscat Asian Beach Games Organising Committee (MABGOC) for an outstanding performance from the youngest competitor in the Games

MWWF with WWWC has successfully co-organized the 4 rounds of the 2010 Malaysian National Waterski & Wakeboard Championships in Putrajaya

Malaysian national team comprising Phillipa Yoong and Aaliyah Yoong, led by Hanifah Yoong (Team Manager) participated in the World Waterski Championships in Dubna, Russia (18-24 Jul)

MWWF together WWWC organized the Sarawak Wakeboard World Cup and Sarawak Youth Wakeboard Cup in Kuching, East Malaysia (15-18 Sep)

Malaysian national team comprising Alex Yoong, Phillipa Yoong, Aaliyah Yoong, Cheah Hsu Ann, Shamal Norman Abdul Rahman, Sophea Ayna Yein, Nur Qamarina Shamsul Anuar, Hanis Azemi, Syahir Nasir, Nadiah Nasir, Hadi Irfan Rahaizah, Dzakri Bohari, Wan Arafan Edruce (Open/U17 Team Waterski & Wakeboard) to the Nautique IWWF Asian Waterski & Wakeboard Championships held in Putrajaya (05-09 Oct). Medals won: 2 Gold Medals (Phillipa Yoong – women’s slalom, Aaliyah Yoong – U17 girls’ tricks), 3 Silver Medals (Shamal Norman – U17 boys slalom and jump, Nadiah Nasir – U17 girls slalom), 2 Bronze Medals (Aaliyah Yoong – women’s tricks, Hanis Azemi – U17 girls’ tricks)

Malaysian national team comprising Alex Yoong, Phillipa Yoong, Aaliyah Yoong, Cheah Hsu Ann, Shamal Norman Abdul Rahman, Zahhar Shamsul Anuar, Zaim Shamsul Anuar, Sophea Ayna Yein, Nur Qamarina Shamsul Anuar (Waterski & Wakeboard) and officials, Hanifah Yoong (Team Manager), Siti Nooraida Mohammad (Assistant Team Manager) and Al Fisal Mohamed Nor (Coach) to the 26th Palembang SEA Games (16-18 Nov). Medals won: 4 Gold Medals (Alex Yoong – men’s overall, Phillipa Yoong – women’s overall and slalom, Aaliyah Yoong – women’s tricks), 2 Silver Medals (Alex Yoong – men’s slalom), and 2 Bronze Medals (Phillipa Yoong – women’s tricks).  Aaliyah Yoong become the youngest ever SEA Games gold medalist at 8 in the 50 years history of the SEA Games

Present MWWF shift focus to international tournaments participation by our young National Squad members to hone their mental resilience and to gain international experience

2012 – Malaysian national team comprising Alex Yoong, Phillipa Yoong, Aaliyah Yoong and officials Ahmad Azuddin Arshad (Team Manager), Hanifah Yoong (Team Coach), Norzeela Sulaiman (Chaperon) to the Asian Waterski Championships in Chuncheon, Korea (25-29 Aug) Medals won: 2 Gold medals (Phillipa Yoong – women’s slalom, Aaliyah Yoong – U17 girls tricks) 1 bronze (Aaliyah Yoong – women’s tricks)

Participation of Aaliyah Yoong accompanied by Hanifah Yoong (Team Manager/Coach) in 2012 World Junior Waterski Championships in Melbourne, Australia (20-24 Feb). Aaliyah entered final and finished 7th

Phillipa Yoong has been appointed as a Jury panel for the 2012 World Junior Waterski Championships in Melbourne, Australia

Malaysian national team comprising Alex Yoong, Aaliyah Yoong, Aiden Yoong, Arianna Chow, Nurulanis Mohamad Isa, Syahir Nasir and officials Hanifah Yoong (Team Manager), Marian Malaquin (Team Coach) to the Asian Waterski Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia (25-29 Sep). Medals won: 2 Gold medals (Aaliyah Yoong – Women’s and U17 girls tricks), 1 Silver Medal (Arianna Chow – U17 girls tricks). Aaliyah became the youngest champion in Asian Open Women Tricks at 10

Aaliyah participated in Junior Moomba Masters in Melbourne, Australia (05-06 Mar) and finished silver in tricks

Sent junior athletes, Aaliyah Yoong, Aiden Yoong, Adam Yoong, Syahir Nasir, Wong Quinn Wai and Mia Kondrollochis to represent Malaysia to the Indonesia Open & Malindo Jr. Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia (19-23 Mar). Medal won: 3 gold medals (Aaliyah Yoong – U17 girls tricks & slalom, Syahir Nasir – U17 boys slalom), 2 silver medals (Aaliyah Yoong – U17 girls jump, Wong Quinn Wai – U14 boys tricks) 3 bronze medals (Aiden Yoong – U17 boys tricks, Wong Quinn Wai –  U14 boys jump, Adam Yoong – U14 boys tricks)

MWWF hosted the Coaches & Judges Development Seminar at Pullman Putrajaya on 24-25 Apr

Malaysian national team comprising Aaliyah Yoong, Aiden Yoong, Adam Yoong, Syahir Nasir, Ariana Chow, Cheah Hsu Ann, Ariana Eimer (Open/U17 Team Waterski & Wakeboard) and officials, Hanifah Yoong (Team Manager), Danny Choo (Wakeboard Team Coach), Joakim Chienh (Team Physio) and Angela Eimer (Team Chaperon) to the Asian Ocenian Waterski & Wakeboard Championships in Perth, Australia (05-12 Oct). Medals won: 1 gold (Aaliyah Yoong – AO U17 girls tricks), 4 Silver Medals (Aaliyah Yoong – Asian & AO women’s tricks and Arianna Chow – Asian women’s tricks, Aiden Yoong – Asia U17 boys tricks) and 1 bronze (Arianna Chow – Asian women’s tricks)

Malaysian national team comprising Aaliyah Yoong, Aiden Yoong, Syahir Nasir, Cheah Hsu Ann, Jeff Oh and officials, Roland Tan (Team Manager), Aznee Mansor (Assistant Team Manager) and Hanifah Yoong (Team Coach) to the 4th Asian Beach Games, in Phuket, Thailand (16-18 Nov). Medals won: 2 Silver Medals (Aaliyah Yoong – Women’s Overall and Tricks), 2 Silver Medal (Alex Yoong – Men’s Overall, Aaliyah – Women’s Jump), and 3 Bronze Medals (Alex Yoong – Men’s Jump and Slalom, Aiden Yoong – Men’s Tricks)

Four (4) Malaysian officials appointed for the 4th Asian Beach Games held in Phuket, Thailand – Phillipa Yoong (Judge), Norzeela Sulaiman (Asst. Scorer), Danny Choo (Waterski Boat Driver) and Emirul Shahimy Ab Wahab (Wakeboard Boat Driver)

Malaysian national team comprising Alex Yoong, Aaliyah Yoong, Aiden Yoong and Syahir Nasir, Cheah Hsu Ann, Jeff Oh, Adam Yoong (Team Waterski & Wakeboard) and officials, Hanifah Yoong (Team Manager), Roland Tan (Assistant Team Manager), Larry Gisler (Waterski Team Coach), Al Fisal Mohamed Nor (Wakeboard Team Coach) and Norzeela Sulaiman (Team Chaperon) to the 28th Singapore SEA Games (10-14 Jun). Medals won: 2 Gold medals (Aaliyah Yoong – Women’s Overall and Tricks), 2 Silver Medal (Alex Yoong – Men’s Overall, Aaliyah – Women’s Jump), and 3 Bronze Medals (Alex Yoong – Men’s Jump and Slalom, Aiden Yoong – Men’s Tricks)

Medals won: 5 Gold medals (Aaliyah Yoong – U17 girls slalom, tricks, jump, overall & Team Overall) 3 Silver Medals (Arianna Chow – U17 girls tricks & slalom, Aiden – U17 boys tricks)

IWWF selected Aaliyah for 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, Poland (22-29 Jun). Aaliyah had set another historic mark to become the youngest skier to be selected for the World Games at only 13 years of age

Medals won: 2 Gold medals (Aaliyah Yoong – Asian & AO Women’s Tricks), 1 Silver Medal (Aiden – Asian U17 boys tricks) and 2 Bronze Medals (Aaliyah Yoong – Asian women’s overall & Ariana Eimer – Asian women wakeboard). Aaliyah broke Asian and New Zealand tricks record

Medals won: 4 Gold medals (Aaliyah Yoong – Women’s Overall, Jump and Tricks, Adam – Men’s tricks), 1 Silver Medal (Aaliyah – Women’s slalom) and 2 Bronze Medals (Syahir Nasir – Men’s Overall and Slalom)

Aaliyah has been invited for a 3rd time in the 26th US Junior Masters at Atlanta, USA (25 May) and won silver in Tricks
